Last weekend I had the enormous privilage of judging at the 33rd Annual Redcliffe Country Music Club Festival. As usual, the talent was supurb, and, representative of both good and bad in the industry. However, this is not about that; this is about the special guest spot.
The tradition at Redcliffe is that the overall winner of the previous festival returns to do a guest spot at the current festival. Thsi does two things. It shows people who weren't at the last festival the previous winner, and, we get to see how far they've come during the intervening year. Now, for some reason of which I'm still not entirely clear, the guest artist didn't/couldn't show up. So who gets asked to do a spot about five minutes before it's due to start? Sue and I do. You have to understand that for all of the day before, and most of that day, I have had a hand in judging most of the people in the audience, picking them in their obvious mistakes and trying to correct them in a positive way for future performances. And at times I've had to be a little hard. So now we have to entertain them. Ye gods. I could feel them adjudicating our every move. Oh, and I forgot to tell you, I was the head judge. Double-jeopardy.
